Our Story
Hemenway’s, an icon in the Rhode Island food scene and the go-to destination for fresh, top-of-catch seafood has been serving both locals and visitors to the capital city for decades. Constantly innovating, Chef Max Peterson delights in creating dishes that utilize the freshest selections from New England’s fishmongers and purveyors. At the heart of the restaurant is our heralded Raw Bar, where guests indulge in our signature Shellfish Platter while enjoying views of the Providence skyline. Centrally located, the proximity of the restaurant to PPAC, the RISD Museum, Waterfire, Brown University, Johnson & Wales, hotels, and the RI Convention Center make us an ideal destination for those visiting the city. Max Peterson Executive Chef
Executive Chef Max Peterson, a native of Massachusetts, has cooked from coast to coast.
A Fall River native, Executive Chef Max Peterson credits his parents for starting him on his culinary journey and helping him find his passion. Working with Chef Jonathan Caressimo helped nurture that passion and after graduating from UMASS Amherst, Chef Max decided to focus his energy on becoming a Chef. He helped open the Zephyr Grill and Bar in Livermore, CA and then headed back east to join the West on Centre in Roxbury, MA. It’s there he would meet his wife Emma. Eventually Chef Max joined the Newport Restaurant Group as a sous chef at Boat House. It wasn’t long before Chef’s talents helped him rise to the top and he was named the Executive Chef at Hemenway’s in 2013. With his breadth of knowledge from prime steaks to refined American cuisine, he creates varied and distinctive menus while showcasing a colorful array of fresh seafood selections as he continues Hemenway’s long-time tradition as a “Providence seafood classic.”
